In Life Stories: The Collected Stories of Maria Elsa da Rocha, a collection of 26 short stories, mostly written in the decade following 1961, Maria Elsa da Rocha depicts the Goa of her past and present. Drawing on family-lore and real-life incidents witnessed during her time as a schoolteacher, focussing on life as subjectively experienced, Rocha wrote about people from all walks of life – wealthy bhatcars and impoverished flower sellers, Divar doctors and Nanuz labourers, teachers of Marathi and Damanese soldiers, returning shippies and Bombay migrants, rebellious teenagers and wilful old ladies – but always with compassion, respect and tenderness. Fourteen of the stories featured here were collected in Vivencias Partilhadas (Third Millenium, 2005), six appeared in Goa’s erstwhile Portuguese press, and another six went unpublished during the author’s lifetime.

About the Contributors

Maria Elsa da Rocha (1924-2007), a Goan short-story writer and poet in Portuguese, was a school teacher by profession, which took her all over Goa (and Damão). The experiences she accrued would feed into her stories, which were also often based on hearsay and anecdotes. Throughout the 1960s, Rocha contributed short stories to the Margão-based Portuguese language newspaper A Vida, in which she co-edited a cultural page together, and the Portuguese-language programme 'Renascença' broadcast on All-India Radio. In 2005 a collection of her short stories appeared under the title Vivências Partilhadas(Third Millenium, 2005).

Paul Melo e Castro is a British scholar and academic, known for his work on editing and translating particularly Indo-Portuguese literature. His area of work is Lusophone literature, film and visual culture.
