About the Contributors
The author was one of India’s most celebrated, well known, immensely gifted writers, and she spoke out boldly and with passion about those whose voices had been silenced or never been heard: women, the marginalized, the powerless, the unfortunate. She won numerous awards and honours for her writing including the highest prize for literature in the country–the Jnanpith in 2000. She also received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1983, the Kamal Kumari Foundation National award, the Bharat Nirman award, the Katha National award for Literature, Asom Sahitya Sabha award, the International Tulsi award from Florida University for her work Ramayana–Ganga to Brahmaputra. She was the Principal Prince Klaus Laureate for her contribution to literature, culture and social change, and was awarded the Asom Ratna posthumously by the government of Assam.
The translator is the author of The House with a Thousand Stories. He lives in Guwahati.
