In his novel, Mother India, the author, Prayaag Akbar, examines the societal issues and political climate of modern India through the lives of its characters. Set against the backdrop of a polarized society, the narrative follows Mayank Tyagi, a young graphics designer, and Nisha Bisht, a sales assistant at a luxury chocolate store. Their lives become intertwined when Mayank, under pressure from his unscrupulous boss Kaushik, uses Nisha’s image in a controversial video that portrays “Mother India” as under attack from various perceived threats, including leftist students and Muslims.

The novel explores themes of nationalism, identity, and the impact of social media on personal lives. As Mayank grapples with the consequences of his actions—using Nisha’s likeness without her consent—he reflects on the nature of virality and its potential to harm individuals while stirring public sentiment. The story critiques how media manipulation can distort reality and exacerbate societal divisions, highlighting the often empty roots of nationalistic pride in contemporary discourse.

Akbar’s narrative is rich with social commentary, addressing issues such as caste discrimination, religious intolerance, and the ethics of survival in a rapidly changing urban landscape. He draws on his background in journalism to provide a nuanced portrayal of the struggles faced by young people in India today, navigating their aspirations amid a complex socio-political environment.
