Cursed Bunny is a collection of short stories by Bora Chung that blends genres such as surrealism, horror, magic/fantasy, and science fiction, many of them inspired by Russian and Slavic fairytales. The eponymous story, Cursed Bunny, is about a family that makes fetishes, in this case a lamp shaped like a bunny that brings ruin upon all who touch it. The story is a meditation on capitalism and greed, and it chronicles the domino-effect tragedy caused by the cursed bunny that brings ruin upon the family. The family members quite literally rot of greed, and the CEO’s grandson slowly dies. Another story follows a young monster who is forced into underground fight rings without knowing the force of his own power. Throughout the stories, there are consistent themes of trauma, abuse, and revenge.

The stories in the book occupy 247 pages, and readers need to be ready to take a journey on what it means to strictly not be defined by a single genre. The book has been translated by Anton Hur, and it has received positive reviews for its strange, surreal, and sometimes shocking stories. Cursed Bunny has been praised for its ability to blend genres and teach critical lessons, and it has been compared to Ludmilla Petrushevskaya’s “There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbors.”
