About the Editors
Leo Hamalian died on November 8, 2003 at the age of 83. For more than 40 years he was a beloved CCNY English professor; dean of guidance at CCNY and dean of academic affairs at California Institute of the Arts; distinguished author or editor of more than 25 books and well over 150 articles; Fulbright or exchange scholar at Universities of Damascus, Tehran, Hamburg and Paris; for 31 years editor of the literary quarterly Ararat. He is mourned by his wife, Linda, of Manhattan, as well as by sons Derek of Hilliard, OH, and Jeffrey of Ridgefield Park, NJ; daughter Leslie H. Kaiser of Temple, ME, and six grandchildren.
Dr. Edmond Volpe, was the first president of the College. Dr. Volpe graduated from Hillhouse High School in his native New Haven, Conn., and received his bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan. He served in Panama with the U.S. Army during World War II before completing a master's degree and a doctorate in English at Columbia University. The professor of English and American literature joined the faculty of Manhattan's City College in 1954. He spent a year in France, beginning in the fall of 1960, as a Fulbright professor, teaching at the universities of Rennes and Grenoble. He served as chair of the City College Department of English from 1964 to 1970.During his teaching career, Dr. Volpe published dozens of academic essays and monographs and gained acclaim for his scholarship on William Faulkner; his 1964 critical study of the author's novels, "A Reader's Guide to William Faulkner," has remained in print for more than 40 years.Dr. Volpe, the English professor and William Faulkner scholar who served as CSI's president for 20 years, died today in Richmond University Medical Center. He was 85.
