About the Author
Francisco João da Costa (1859-1900), more widely known by his nom de plume, Gip, was a reputed figure in Goan journalism of the nineteenth century. A student of law, he gradually became known as a journalist and short-story writer.
In 1882, Gip began writing for O Ultramar, a newspaper his uncle, Bernardo Francisco da Costa, had founded. In this newspaper, he famously serialized the Portuguese novel, Jacob e Dulce (Jacob and Dulce), published here in a facsimile edition.
