On some days, the transition from evening to night is almost imperceptible, and as the day winds down, it brings us closer to our true selves than many of us may be comfortable with. The dark has a way of stripping away the barriers that we so carefully construct around ourselves—our masks, our wards, our safeguards against the world. It can leave us feeling raw, and remind us of just how much of the world is beyond our control.
The night hides things from us, but it is just as likely to illuminate our darkest corners. It comes with the promise of solitude, of release, of blissful silence, but it also makes us fearful and reckless. It pushes us to say and do things that we would never otherwise believe ourselves to be capable of. More than anything else, the night has an unfailing tendency to set things in motion, and as hard as we may try to stay on our intended paths, it has a way of quickening our footsteps and leading us astray.
After Hours: Volume 5 of the Helter Skelter Anthology of New Writing contains stories of betrayal and bad omens, wrinkled clothes and tired eyes, cemeteries, battlefields, halogen suns, and heartbreak. There are stories here that serve as warnings—not everything that lurks in the shadows is a monster, and not all monsters live in the dark. Some of these pieces of writing are best read after dark. You may want to leave the lights on.
