Seventy years into our independence from colonial rule, we live in a dangerous atmosphere, where individual freedoms are taken for granted, where it has become commonplace to lynch minorities, where dissenters are heavily punished and penalised. Combine this political background of religious majoritarianism with a misogynist, all-powerful caste system—and we have a potent system that allows no stepping out of line. The murders of rationalists (M M Kalburgi, Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar) and the killing of Mohammed Akhlaq for allegedly eating beef led to one of the largest protests in the world. An opressive climate mkaes us re-calibrate our priorities. We must continue to engage and struggle towards equality and change.
In Dissent: Volume 6 of the Helter Skelter Anthology of New Writing the contributors to this volume have all embarked on an individual quest to explore what the theme of dissent means to them and their stories and their poems will help us broaden our horizons of the multiple meanings it holds, and what it means as an everyday, revolutionary practice.
