Originally published in Portuguese in 1987 as Contos Regionais, Rodrigues’ collection features a set of short stories that are by turns satirical, sentimental, comic and melodramatic, stretching from the author’s present day back to the eighteenth century, taking in characters low and high, virtuous, reprehensible or foolish, but always showing a deep attachment to a particular vision of Goa. In every sense of the word, discussed in the translator’s extensive afterword, these are truly Regional Tales.
