Weeds in the Red Dust: The Collected Stories of Epitácio Pais, translated by Paul Melo e Castro ranges across a Goa shaken up in the 1950s, 60s and 70s by mining and tourism, regime change and deep social shifts, and provide a compelling patchwork account of a region facing breakneck change and many old problems. Though hailed by figures such as polymath José Pereira as ‘one of the finest writers in the long tradition of Goan literature in Portuguese’, Pais is yet to receive the attention he deserves. The present volume seeks to remedy this state of affairs, bringing together for the first time in English the twelve stories from the 1973 collection Os Javalis de Codval with eleven scattered or unpublished texts. It closes with an extensive essay by the translator, which takes up critic Manuel de Seabra’s remarks on Pais’ ‘tragic vision’ as a means to renew a critical debate long in abeyance.
