Ce présent ouvrage est un recueil de poèmes composés par Nanak Dev (1469-1539). C’est la première fois que les lecteurs francophones peuvent vraiment lire, étudier et comprendre Nanak Dev. Peu de gens dans le monde francophone connaissent que Nanak Dev était un réformateur, un voyageur légendaire et surtout un poète incomparable. Durant vingt-quatre ans, il a voyagé à travers l’Inde, l’Arabie, l’Irak, la Perse, l’Afghanistan, le Tibet et le Sri Lanka. Aucun prophète n’a jamais autant voyagé. Doué d’une amabilité intellectuelle, émotionnelle et spirituelle surprenante depuis son enfance, il a accompli des œuvres extraordinaires dans les domaines littéraires, sociaux, philosophiques et religieux. Son esprit vif observait tout ce qui l’entourait, lui procurant une connaissance superbement reflétée dans ses poèmes.
Les chansons de Nanak Dev se trouvent dans le livre saint Sikh, l’Adi Granth, un recueil de chants datant de 1604. Elles sont juxtaposées avec les compositions d’autres auteurs à travers les 1430 pages, toutes arrangées selon les accords musicaux – Raags –  et non pas selon le sujet ou le thème. La lecture rituelle de l’Adi Granth étant la norme dans un culte sikh, peu de gens comprennent les pensées de Nanak Dev, son idéologie, ses dons littéraires et linguistiques, ses soucis sociaux et religieux, son approche simple de la vie. Il rejetait la duplicité, l’hypocrisie et la fourberie constituant le mode de vie des chefs religieux hindous, musulmans, jains et bouddhistes.

This book contains all poems composed by Nanak Dev (1469-1539). For the first time the French-speaking people have this collection in French that should facilitate reading, studying and doing research on Nanak Dev. Few in the francophone world know that Nanak Dev was a reformer, a legendary traveller, and above all an incomparable poet. For twenty-four years he travelled all over India, Arabia, Iraq, Persia, Afghanistan, Tibet and Sri Lanka. No other prophet had travelled as much. Gifted with an amazing intellectual, emotional and spiritual amiability from young age, he accomplished extraordinary oeuvres in the literary, social, philosophical and religious fields. His lively mind observed all around him procuring him knowledge superbly reflected in his poems.
Nanak’s songs are found in the holy Sikh scriptures, the Adi Granth, an anthology dated 1604. They are juxtaposed over 1430 pages with the compositions of many other authors arranged according to musical accords – Raags, and not according to subjects or themes. The ritualistic reading of the Adi Granth being the norm of Sikh worship, few understand Nanak Dev’s thoughts, ideology, literary and linguistic gifts, social and religious concerns, and approach to a simple life. He rejected duplicity, hypocrisy and trickery that was the lifestyle of Hindu, Muslim, Jain and Buddhist religious leaders.

NAGINDER SINGH SEHMI est diplômé  de Trinity Collège, Dublin Université (1959-1963) en histoire, géographie et psychologie. Après ses études sur les ressources en eaux à Prague, il a été hydrologue au Ministère de l’Eau du Kenya puis au sein de l’Organisation Météorologique Mondiale pendant trente ans. Depuis son plus jeune âge, il se questionne  sur l’utilité des traditions religieuses, surtout au sein de la communauté sikhe. Armé de connaissances techniques et scientifiques modernes, il est convaincu que la plupart des pratiques religieuses ont gravement dévié depuis les écrits de leurs fondateurs, surtout celles liées à Nanak Dev (1469-1539) le premier guru des Sikhs. La seule façon par laquelle Naginder pouvait  démontrer cela était de connaître et faire connaître ce que Nanak Dev a écrit dans plus de neuf cent de ses chansons. En traduisant ses chansons en français il a fourni en même temps un outil convenable à la communauté francophone en général et aux chercheurs académiques en particulier à travers une plateforme qui peut guider le monde vers un juste chemin.

L’auteur, qui habite à Genève, Suisse, invite ses lecteurs à lui faire part des corrections ou commentaires éventuels qui pourront l’aider à améliorer ses écritures au profit de tous.

AUTHOR
NAGINDER SINGH SEHMI graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University (1959-63) in history, geography and psychology. He studied water resources in Prague and served as hydrologist in the Kenya Ministry for Water and then in the World Meteorological Organization for thirty years. From a young age he questioned the utility of religious traditions, especially in the Sikh community. In the light of his technical and scientific knowledge, he was convinced that most of the religious practices have seriously deviated from the writings of the founders, in particular from those of Nanak Dev (1469-1539), the first guru of the Sikhs. The only way Naginder could demonstrate this was to know and make known what Nanak has written in his more than nine hundred songs. By translating these songs into French he has furnished a suitable tool to the French-speaking community in general and to academic researchers in particular, using a platform that could guide the world towards a just path.
The author, who lives in Geneva, Switzerland, invites readers to send him their corrections and comments that would help to improve the writing for the benefit of all.
