Lexicographer, philologist and glottologist, Mgr. Seabstião Rodolfo Dalgado (1855-1922) is among the most cited scholars in the world. His mother tongue was Konkani and he learned Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Portuguese, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Arabic, Persian, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil, and many other languages with which he came into contact as a Christian missionary. He is the author of nineteen scholarly works of permanent value in Luso-Oriental studies, in particular Indo-Portuguese, Sanskrit and Konkani. Among his well known works are Glossário Luso-Asiático. Influência do Vocabulário Portugês em Linguas Asiáticas, Diccionário Konkani Português Philologico-Etymologico and Diccionario Portugês-Konkani.

He was the first translator from Sanskrit into Portuguese and perhaps the first scholar to make a systematic study of Indo-Portuguese dialects. He was elected Member of the Royal Asiatic Society, London, and of the Academy of Sciences, Lisbon.

In the last years this widely travelled scholar was confined to his room: one leg amputated in 1911 and the other four years later. But the indefatigable Dalgado turned his room into a classroom and library, and his bed a writer’s desk.

Most of Mgr. Dalgado’s works are in Portuguese, but his contribution to Konkani is basic and lasting. His dictionaries, his book on the Konkani proverbs, his Konkani grammar, and the articles he wrote in defence of Konkani in Heraldo, the Portuguese daily of Panjim, are gratefully cherished by his countrymen.
