Physicist, biologist, inventor, visionary, J. C. Bose was the first modern scientist of India. In the late nineteenth century it was hard to believe that an Indian could become a scientist. Working in primitive conditions, without any financial help and constantly battling the scepticism of the scientific establishment, Bose invented the first instruments of wireless telegraphy – the technology that is the basis of all communication today. He invented many sensitive instruments for his research, both in physics and physiology.

Bose astonished the international scientific community with his inventions and travellled across the world, winning laurels with his achievements. He also engaged in the exploration of physics and biology, a field that is known today as biophysics, which seeks the basic unity of life. The renowned Bose Institute in Kolkota, a temple of scientific research, was set up by him.
