Born to a traditional family in Karnal, Haryana, Kalpana Chawla was the youngest of four children. She fought odds and overcame obstacles to pursue aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College and then went abroad to earn a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado, USA.

She joined NASA, where she was described as a ‘terrific engineer’. Soon, she was selected as an astronaut candidate. She made the journey into space not once but twice. Her promising life ended tragically during her second tour to space shuttle Columbia disintegrated on February 1, 2003.
