Francis Newton Souza, whose biography this book is, and Victor Rangel-Ribeiro, its author, were both born in Goa, in villages just a few miles apart. Souza was born in 1924, and Rangel-Ribeiro in 1925; they spent their formative childhood years in Goa, and their teenage years in Bombay, now Mumbai. They also both began their professional careers in Bombay before migrating overseas, Francis Newton to London, Victor to New York. They became fast friends when Francis and his second wife, Barbara Zinkant, moved to New York in 1967, and remained friends until Souza’s unexpected death in Mumbai in 2003. This biography of Francis Newton Souza hence reflects the empathy born of their shared background and decades-long friendship; it also incorporates eight years of meticulous research carried out by the author in London, New York, New Delhi, Goa and Bombay, including letters the artists exchanged with colleagues like Raza and Gaitonde, inputs from fellow-artists and gallery owners in those cities, and the cooperation of members of the artist’s own family, especially Ms. Zinkant.
