Building greater access to financialservices for the poor could be a powerful tool for eradicating poverty. Economists have long argued that providing a complete set of financial services to the poor would go a long way in releasing them from the clutches of poverty.

The Self-Help Group model, organised around mutuality and trust, was the earliest institutional form of micro-finance across India. This study is an investigation into the economic and social empowerment of women through Self-Help Groups in Goa.

Initiated in Goa in 1992, the Self-Help Group model was meant to ensure that women who were otherwise financially excluded could have an access to credit. This, in turn, would enable them to help themselves and others, economically and socially. The Self-Help Group model in Goa is found to have boosted the self-confidence of women. Yet the empowerment of women still remains a distant dream and a matter of grave concern.
