Forever Yours appears to comfortably wear the apparel of a docu-novel. Set in contemporary village Goa, the story of the family of João Mistri is narrated by his son Isidor, a story the beginning of which the boy has heard his grandmother relate. The account spans three generations, it throws light on major family events like birth and death, and many attendant social customs and personal quirks of the characters that inhabit this mini-cosmos. But the central motif is marriage, all that it signifies to the family, the neighbourhood, the community. As the daughters of João Mistri are married, one after the other, times change, and tradition slowly, very slowly, gives way to new ways of thinking, doing, being. The author takes immense pains to document the mores of a Catholic neighbourhood in Goa, especially those that revolve around marriage the network of relationships, the food and drink, the songs, the turns of phrase, and the beliefs that underpin the social fabric. — Isabel de Santa Rita Vas
