The chapters in the second part, broadly concerned with the politics of language, literature and identity in colonial Tamilnadu, make an important contribution to the cultural history of the Dravidian movement. A historical exploration of how the Tamil literary canon was constructed leads to chapters on the ways in which this canon was used to construct identity. The author draws from sources as varied as poetry, fiction, essays, reviews, comments, advertisements, and notices to bring to life a rich and vibrant cultural history. About the Author
A.R. Venkatachalapathy (1967) took his PhD in history from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi for his dissertation on the print culture in colonial Tamilnadu. Presently he is Associate Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai. He has earlier taught in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, the University of Madras and the University of Chicago. An accomplished Tamil writer, he has written/edited over fifteen books in Tamil combining rigorous scholarly discipline with literary flair. He is also the translator of Sundara Ramaswamy’s J.J.: Some Jottings (Katha, 2004).
