Abbé Faria has shown himself a true pioneer in the art and science of hypnosis. His life and major contributions to hypnotism are outlined in this book. He has experimented with hypnosis, a state he called “lucid sleep”, on more than five thousand indiciduals. He also questioned Mesmer’s theory of magnetic fluid and beleived that “magnetic fits” were not only unnecessary for healing, but potentially harmful.
He has also suggested a method of inducing and interrupting trance verbally as well as observed and described numerous hypnotic phenomena, along with their psychological explanations.
