Thomas Stephens Englishman, of Society of Jesus, printed at Rachol in 1616, with the permission of the Holy Inquistion and Ordinary, in the college of All Saints of Society of Jesus.

The subject of the Purana as stated by Fr. Stephens in the preface of the book: O faithful good Christians, the story of Lord Jesus Christ, the Redeemer, is written in this Purana. This story has two parts or two Puranas. in the first Purana have told the story of the Creation from the beginning, Almighty God accomplished many good deeds and decided to send his only Son in this world. In the second Purana having told that Jesus Christ, the Redeemer took birth as man till he entered Heaven. The Purana was written to quench the spiritual hunger of new Christians. It was written in Marathi comprising 10962 verses in all.

About the Translator

Suresh Gundu Amonkar has given significant contribution to the three fields of activity. The first one is education, where as a teacher, he initially taught in the Goan School, Mombasa, Kenya and later won laurels in Goa for his achievements. He was the Headmasterof New Goa High School and later worked as Chairman. Goa, Daman & Diu Board of Secondary Education for eight years and as Director of State Literacy Mission and Director of Adult Education.

About the Author

Thomas Stephens was born at Bulstan, Wiltshire (diocese of Salisbury) in 1549. He fled from England as English Catholics were persecuted and reached Rome and joined the Seminary of Sant Andrea on October 20, 1575. As a fervent novice, he longed to die for the faith in Hindusthan. Father General of the Society of Jesus, sent him to Lisbon and he sailed by St. Lawrence in one of the five ships that left Lisbon on April 4, 1579. He reached Goa on 24th October, 1579 and was ordained as a priest in Goa six months later. He was sent to Salcete to help the Christians lately converted. He served in Salcete for 39 years mainly in Margao, Benaulim, Curtorim, Raia and Rachol where he served as the Rector of the seminary for 5 years. He mastered Marathi, Konkani and wrote Kristha Purana, completed it in 1614 and published it in 1616 at the Rachol Seminary. He passed away in 1619. He also wrote Doutrina Christam (Christian Doctrine) and a book of Konkani Grammar (Arte da Lingua Bramana Canarin).
