This book analyses the trends in the pattern employment in the three sectors of the Economy of Goa, namely, the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary sectors and their sub-sectors, in the post Liberation period. The study is primarily based on Census data. Based on the pattern of employment, the nature of economic development of Goa is discussed.
The study finds that there is a definite shift in the pattern of employment in Goa, from 1961 to 2001, and this shift is from the Primary sector to the Tertiary sector, as in the rest of India. Within the Tertiary sector, there is a shift of employment in favour of Trade and Commerce.
What we are experiencing in Goa is a “consumption-oriented growth”, rather than a ‘production-oriented growth”, due to the inadequate development of the productive sectors, namely, the Primary and Secondary Sectors of the Economy.
It has been written in a simple manner for students, research scholars, teachers of Economics, as well as members of the general public, interested in knowing the nature of economic development in Goa.
