The ruins of the church and convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Chimbel were, until very recently, virtually unknown to the outside world. Following a trail of old photographs and historic references, the authors were able to survey the ruins and bring to life a magnificent Baroque inspired architectural structure that lay hidden beneath the dense vegetation.
Piecing together the history of this peculiar heritage site, this book delves into its complex past, from the 18 th century Tertiary Carmelite convent to the institutionalized mental patients of the Asilo dos Alienados two centuries later. The book brings to the fore socially side-lined narratives of Goa’s past after decades of oblivion.
While the challenges to preserve this heritage site are enormous, this book aims to be a starting point to place Chimbel back on the heritage map by demonstrating its crucial cultural significance to Goan society. This book compiles extensive historical research from Goan and Portuguese Historical Archives as well as a wide range of architectural plans and 3D reconstitutions of this once remarkable heritage site.
