Description
The Pilar hillock is a centre of tourist attraction besides being a place of pilgrimage and as well as a centre of inter-religious dialogue. It is situated in Govapuri, the centuries-old capital of the South Konkan Shilaharas and the Kadambas, both of which ruled parts of what is today Goa. Its history was brought to light by the discovery of ancient artifacts while digging the foundations for the educational institutions built there, and while desilting an old tank that today lies within the compound of the seminary and offices of the Society of Pilar. All these artifacts, collected and mounted in the Pilar Seminary museum, are described in this book, in relation to the dynasties and the periods they ruled in. After the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, the hillock passed into the hands of the Catholic orders, the Capuchins, Carmelites, and the Society of Pilar. Artifacts left or collected by them in the form of paintings, statues, coins, and others are also described in this work.
