Irmandade de Nossa Senhora Madre de Deus Virgem Maria da Misericórdia commonly known as Santa Casa da Misericórdia was established in Lisbon in 1498. The year Vasco da Gama made his first epoch journey to India via Cape of Good Hope.
In the sixteenth century when Portuguese acquired some territories in the East, they established a branch of the brotherhood of Misericórdia in many places including Goa.
This work deals with the Misericórdia in Goa and covers the period from the early sixteenth century to the end of Portuguese rule in 1961.
