About the Author

Dr. Julião Menezes was born in Assolna, Goa, on August 7,1900. He completed his early education in Assolna and Panjim and completed his MD in Medicine at the Berlin University. During his stay at the German University, he saw nationalist pre-World War II awakening in Europe. He took up study of Indian history - Indology - while continuing his doctorate in medicine.

He then joined the Indian nationalist struggle. During this time he met Ram Manohar Lohia and helped him to expand the activities of the Indian Students' Union.

Dr. Menezes reactivated the Clube Juvenile de Assolna to spread the nationalist thinking and nationalist activities. He also launched the Gomantak Praja Mandal in 1939 to spread nationalist activities amongst Goans, and published its policy statement in 1940.
