Year after year towards the end of June, Santal men, women and children make the long walk to the spot where the Santal Rebellion started in 1855. Tracing the route of the uprising, this long walk is to remember and celebrate one defining moment in adivasi history.
The Hul, as it was and still is called, left a deep impression upon the social imaginary of the Santal people. It was a last ditch effort to defend their way of life which was being undermined by the influx of outsiders. This is a book for children to remember and cherish our heroes and their deeds.

About the Author

Ruby Hembrom is the founder director of adivaani, an archiving and publishing outfit of and by Adivasis started in July, 2012. She is the writer of adivaani’s Santal Creation Stories for children, a recast of the Santal Creation myths in English and Disaibon Hul, a story on the Santal Rebellion of 1855-57.

This publishing initiative grew out of a need to claim Adivasi stake in historical and contemporary literary spaces and as peoples. Books she believes are a great way of announcing Adivasi presence, keeping their voices relevant and in circulation. Speaking for themselves, whether they meet industry standards, criterion or not is the approach she endorses, challenges and positions through this platform for Adivasi expression.
