The spectacular mountains and hills of northern India have been immortalised in literature and the arts for centuries. Under the British, and in the post-independence period, the higher Himalaya along with he foothills attracted a number of scholars, explorers and artists. In most works, this region is casts as an exotic and mysterious “hidden” land.

This issue interrogates the manner in which the places are constructed by the perceptions of “outsiders” as well as self-imaging by locals for political and economic ends.

The essays here highlight the processes that inform the making of tradition, ritual, material culture and regional heritage. These are discussed within the framework of contemporary social developments such as tourism, and changing ecology.
