Greenlights is not a memoir, though it tells true stories from his life in chronological order. Nor is it “an advice book”. McConaughey wants readers to come away understanding that those yellow and red lights that annoy us and drag us down will soon to turn green. The “Greenlights” of the title refers to moments when the universe gives us permission to do new things; reds and yellows are the things that stand in our way. He discusses everything- his hopes, his dreams (both normal and wet), and the hardest lessons he’s learned. His tales are funny, brutally honest, and full of knowledge to share with listeners. McConaughey doesn’t set out to tell listeners what to do; he strives to tell listeners what he has done. His pronouncements all feed into his core philosophy of what he calls “livin”: “There’s no ‘g’ on the end of livin because life is a verb,” he insists, which is a reasonable way to understand life, if not gerunds.
