Globe-trotting Grandma returns to the quiet of Joe’s sit-out. “The view is worth the climb!,” her Joe said when they chose the topmost apartment. This is where they talked and shared silences, where their children came to relax, where on annual visits their grandchildren marked off their heights on the wall — “How small we were then!” This is where she invites you to taste famous Goan delicacies and to meet some of the wonderful people she has known, among them, postman Pandu, the prayerful Shantadevi, Dona Armida of ‘dona eis requeim’ fame, dear Domingos the versatile cook, the renowned Art Sir, the resourceful Tia Caru, and Victoria Rani’s loyal subject Dukhi Devi.

About the Author
Bernadette Correia Afonso D'Souza brings out her first collection of short stories in 2013, but her love of books goes back to her childhood and youth in a literary family. After graduation, she qualified as a teacher and also acquired the LTCL in piano. She attended evening classes for MEd while lecturing at St Margaret's College, Clare Road, Bombay. Almost at the end of the post graduation course, destiny intervened.
She met Joe, a marine engineer, and chose to have Mrs before her name rather than MEd after it! The scene shifted to Calcutta where bringing up a young family took up the first few years, after which it was back to teaching, interspersed with memorable family events and the exciting episodes described in some of her stories. Then came retirement with her husband in Goa. Their children had meanwhile grown up and finished their education, got married and gone abroad. After Joe died, Bernadette has travelled regularly to her four children and their families halfway across the globe. Living very much in the present, she cherishes her ancestral heritage which features in this book. The picture on the cover is of a patchwork wall hanging she made and entitled Joe’s Sit-Out, which along with this book is her tribute to Joe.
