Choral Voices: Ethnographic Imaginations of Sound and Sacrality, by Sebanti Chatterjee explores the role of choral music in shaping the public life of Goa and Meghalaya, two Christian communities in India. The book uses sound and music practices as a lens to tell the stories of these communities and introduces voice and genre as important aspects of identity formation. Chatterjee weaves a compelling story of belonging and faith, destabilizing notions of culture, colonization, and sound. The book takes readers on a fascinating journey through seminaries, Bollywood, festivals, recitals, and belonging.
The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, Chatterjee explores the history of choral music in Goa, which has been shaped by Portuguese colonization and the influence of Western music. She examines the role of choral music in the seminaries, as well as its use in Bollywood productions. The author also looks at the ways in which choral music has been used to negotiate identity and belonging in Goa. In the second part of the book, the author turns her attention to Meghalaya, where choral music has been shaped by indigenous musical practices and the influence of Western missionaries. She examines the role of choral music in festivals and recitals, as well as its use in negotiating identity and belonging in Meghalaya. The book also explores the ways in which choral music has been used to resist colonialism and assert indigenous identities in Meghalaya.
Choral Voices is the first account of the public life of choral music shaped by imperialistic, cosmopolitan, and indigenous characteristics in these regions of India, and is a valuable resource for scholars researching on music and sound studies, religious studies, cultural anthropology, and sociology of India.
