About the Author

The author lived in India nearly 2000 years ago; nothing is known about him except that he authored Kama Sutra.

The translator is well-known for his translations of Sanskrit classics. Educated at the universities of Allahabad and Oxford, he was for many years a career diplomat, serving as the Indian high commissioner in Kenya and the Seychelles, minister in the United States and ambassador to Portugal and Yugoslavia. His translations from the Sanskrit include The Shattered Thigh and Other Plays, Tales of the Ten Princes, Hitopadesa, Simhasana Dvatrimsika, Subhashitavali, Three Satires from Ancient Kashmir, The Courtesan’s Keeper, Raghuvamsam and The Seduction of Shiva. He has also compiled A Treasury of Sanskrit Poetry, recently translated into Arabic as Khazana al-Shair al-Sanskriti.
