Goa, a tiny strip of land along the west coast of India, has enjoyed and endured a chequered history totally disproportionate to its size. Its importance across time can be gauged from the range and variety of travellers who passed through, and sojourned in Goa. Notable among them were ibn Batuta, the famous Arab who pre-dated and rivals Marco Polo in Importance. There were a number of Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, German, French and British travellers too, apart from writers from other parts of India. These accounts, however, should not be taken at face value. Travellers were not equally reliable; all brought in their own assumptions and prejudice. But their words leave us a useful trail of ideas and information….
