Description

The Cradle of My Dreams is  a private publication brought out on the occasion of the birth centenary of the late Prof. Armando Menezes (1902-1983).  Although Prof. Menezes covered a wide and varied canvas in his writings, this selection of poems and prose pieces has a strong flavour of Goa, the cradle of his dreams. The selection also covers Prof. Menezes’ other passions: his lifelong dedication to education, his ardent nationalism, his love for the romantic lyricism of the classical age, and his unceasing quest for God. This book is offered as an introduction to the works of Armando Menezes, and a small contribution to the body of Indian poetry in English and Indo-Anglian literature in general.

About the Author

Prof. Armando Menezes (1902-1983) was a teacher of English for close to 50 years of his life, having taught at St. Xaviers and Elphinstone Colleges, Bombay; Karnatak College, Dharwar; M N College, Visnagar (Gujarat); and Rajaram College, Kolhapur. He was also Principal of the last three, and continued as Professor of English and Professor Emeritus at the Karnatak University till 1978.

He wrote a fair amount of poetry over this period, some of which he published in five slim volumes brought out at intervals of roughly a decade. His prose appeared in a number of journals, magazines and newspapers in Bombay and Goa.

He was an ardent nationalist in pre-independent India and pre-liberated Goa, when to be a nationalist was to court sacrifice and suffering, and, in the case of Goa, exile. Many of his poems, articles and speeches are products of his longing for freedom and his love for the land.

In his later years he immersed himself in a Karnatak University collaborative project to render into English the works of mystical poets of Karnataka: Sunya Sampadane, Basavanna, Akkamahadevi, Siddharama and Siddhalingeswara. He also published Songs from the Saranas and Other Poems in 1971.
