Many times when people travel they stop at various junctions for a brief moment to sip a cup of tea or take some refreshment. Bhishwanath Gosh, the author of this book, had got down at the Itarsi junction to do the same while travelling from Kanpur to Chennai. As he heard the voice announcing the arrivals and delays of the many trains that pass through the station, it struck him that very little was known about the places which connect the length and breadth of India on the rail map.
From this was born the idea for Chai Chai: Travels in Places Where You Stop But Never Get Off a book which tells the story of the towns behind India’s biggest junctions: Itarsi, Mighal Sarai, Jhansi, Shoranur, Arakkonsm, Jolarpettai- places that are always a stepover and never a destination; familiar yet unknown.
Chai Chai is a definitive work on small-town India.
