Over the past decade and a half, Goa has emerged as India’s foremost destination for ornithologists and birdwatchers flying in from the rest of the country as well as Europe.

Coastal habitats plus a network of saline as well as freshwater wetlands and, barely fifty kilometers away, the rich, virgin forests of the Western Ghats — one of the world’s top twelve biodiversity hotspots with over a dozen bird species endemic to the area — all together provide a fertile setting for a diverse bird population that is a joy to behold and a pleasure to hear.

Birds of Goa is primarily intended as a fairly comprehensive reference work for serious birdwatchers and ornithologists. It attempts to provide information on the habitat, population, distribution, migration, breeding status and any locally relevant data of all the 420 bird species that have been reliably recorded in Goa.
