Description

This painting, by by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, of St John the Baptist preaching to a group of people, is closely identified with one known to have been in the collection of the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, Governor of the Netherlands, in 1633. In this painting, the preaching Saint John the Baptist is virtually lost in the colourful throng of peasants, cripples, gipsies, mischievous children climbing trees, and trees painted with astounding realism. Even the river in the background and the distant church take a more prominent role in the whole than the impersonal figure of the saint in his hair-shirt.

Among the various figures that are recognized, is one of Jesus Christ, who stands close to John the Baptist, slightly detached from the crowd, in a light blue garment, with his arms crossed. Similarly, the white veiled woman and the brown haired man, together, bring to mind Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, in a way that is reminiscent of the Crucifixion scene. Among the audience, there are no two poses, gestures, faces or even clothing that are the same, a testimony to Bruegel’s incredible genius.

Among those listening intently to the sermon is a group of people sitting on the branches of a large tree on the right. One Bruegel scholar identifies the long-bearded man, the woman in a blue-green gown, and the woman in the red gown besides her, as the artist himself, his wife and mother-in-law respectively.
